Discover the power of taking refreshing breaks for better business productivity and life balance.

I know when you’re juggling multiple activities—whether it’s work, personal commitments or both—the thought of taking a break seems impossible.

With back-to-back meetings, tasks and deadlines, it’s all too easy to convince yourself to get on with it without complaining. After all, people depend on you, and you don’t want to fall behind. But that’s how stress builds up, affecting your health—both mentally and physically. In the long run, that’s not helpful to anyone, especially you.

But there’s a way to break the cycle of continuous hustle followed by total exhaustion. I can help you build rejuvenating breaks into your busy schedule without compromising productivity.

In my last blog Time-Blocking Made Easy: The Secret to Managing Your Busy Schedule, I shared how time-blocking can help with organisation, productivity and stress reduction. You’re now going to use this technique to improve these even further.

Do this, and you’ll feel re-energised, less stressed and, as a result, you’ll get more done.

So here’s number four of my five top tips to help you protect your well-being and bring order to your business and life.

Top Tip #4 in my Task-Ticking Tips series , designed to help you turn your busy-ness into your best business.

Tip #4

Take Breaks to Recharge

Don’t underestimate the power of taking a break. Giving yourself a long, restful break or a quick breather before you start the next task or project will help to refresh your focus and boost your energy throughout the day. Whether short or long, these breaks are just as important as the time you've blocked out for your work and other commitments and should be part of your daily routine.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Schedule time for breaks: Using my time-blocking strategies mentioned in my last blog, when grouping tasks, one of your activities should be to take a break. Call it what you want—“break”, “pause”, “rest”, “time-out”, “breather” etc.

  2. Decide on how long: Depending on what you’re aiming for will determine the type and length of break. For example, you need to eat. I bet you often eat at your desk or skip meals altogether while working. I advise blocking at least 30 minutes for lunch, and that too away from your desk. You may need longer if you’re prepping the lunch as well.

  3. Get quickly refreshed: For every time block of work, schedule in blocks of short “breather breaks” between each work block—for example, five to fifteen minutes to stretch, grab a refreshing drink or take a quick walk.

  4. Manage unexpected breaks: Unexpected breaks can be especially beneficial when you're feeling overwhelmed or reach a natural break. For instance, when you hit a mental block, taking a quick walk (breather break) can help trigger ideas. Just remember to take a phone or notebook to record these ideas and adjust your diary accordingly when you return.

  5. Have no work at weekends: To maintain a healthy life balance, block weekends as a break from work. Spending time with loved ones and leisurely activities will leave you revitalised and less stressed. If weekends don’t work for you, allocate at least one day a week for personal time.

Think of your breaks as if they are business tasks—because, in a way, they are. They’re essential to any healthy business and lifestyle. If you’re tempted to skip one, remember: health is your true wealth. Being burnt-out from overwork will hurt your business, your life and your relationships.

I know taking a break can feel tough when you're running a successful business, but scheduling downtime is every bit as important as the work itself. Just as batteries need recharging to keep things running smoothly, better growth for you comes from balancing hard work with mindful self-care and taking time to recharge.
